CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Kurama (human alias: Shuichi Minamino)
Age: 15 in his human body. Truly over a thousand.
Canon: Yu Yu Hakusho
Canon Point: Post Chapter Black Saga
Character Information: Wiki Link!
Personality:Kurama has a multifaceted personality, if only because he plays more than one role in his life. Formerly known as the demon fox thief (Youko) Kurama, he spent the earlier part of his life as a cunning robber who reveled in using his wiles as a powerful fox apparition to take on the most difficult heists he could arrange. He was the master of his own band of thieves, and boasted the title of King of Thieves (or Legendary Bandit, whichever sounds better).
It was, unfortunately, during one of these very burglaries that Kurama was severely injured. Mortally wounded by one of King Yama’s subordinates—this is inferred during the Chapter Black saga, in which one of the Spirit Defense Force mentions having something to do with the spirit fox’s downfall—Kurama chooses to take refuge in the human world, transferring his spirit into the unborn child of Shiori Minamino. He is reborn as a human, Shuichi Minamino, and as he had originally planned, regains the use of his demonic ability within ten years. Despite this, he does not return to Makai as intended, as he has now gained the priority of family, and cares deeply for his “mother,” Shiori. He even goes so far as to burglarize Spirit World with two accomplices (Gouki and Hiei) in order to obtain the Forlorn Hope/Darkness Mirror and sacrifice his own life for her health.
Now is where I can explain each of the personalities in detail.
Shuichi Minamino is an intelligent student who makes high marks in most subjects he takes. Kurama mentions that his classmate, Yu Kaito, does outdo him in writing type subjects, but it is clear that he excels in everything else including science, as other students attempt to convince him to join their club and boost their popularity. “Shuichi” has no interest in such. However, he does take his human life seriously, and has offered to sacrifice himself for his mother many a time, across almost all of the story arcs. This devotion was initially forged at a time when the demon—reborn as a child—still treated his “mother” with aloof disdain. Being what he was, he could not be expected to do any better than that; at least not until he grew careless one day and fell off a stool while trying to reach for something on a high shelf, knocking some glass plates to the ground in the process. Shiori dove forward and reached her arms out to cradle her son’s head, preventing him from any injury. This in turn caused her to slice her arms grievously on the shattered plates, leaving her with permanent and very visible scarring on both forearms. The sacrifice, and also the visual reminder, haunted Kurama for the longest time, and eventually shaped him into a more compassionate individual who despite his much longer life as a ruthless demon, was able to develop a familial attachment to Shiori. He therefore tolerates no threat to her, and anyone who dares to use her as a shield against him (Such as Roto in the Demon Tournament) is met with a gruesome fate.
By his teenage years, Kurama had grown well into his powers, enough to be identified by the fire youkai Hiei, and although he does continue his human existence, Kurama is very much a demon. A wolf—or fox—in sheep’s clothing, if you will. Like his ruthless self in prior existence, Kurama has a deep affinity with plants, and can control them effortlessly by feeding them with his demon energy, or youki. He has the habit of storing seeds in his hair, which is how he manages to create his signature Rose Whip, and which may also offer a strategic explanation for why he grows it so long.
That is part of Kurama’s personality as well; the strategy. He is, of all his companions, the most strategic, and by far one of the most intelligent characters in the series. Both a boon and a detriment to his fighting style is his penchant for allowing a battle to go on long enough for him to study his opponent. This usually leaves him the most injured, as he’s let the fight go on so long that he has to make sacrifices. Both in the Saint Beast Arc and the Demon Tournament Arc, he came out as one of the most heavily injured characters simply for biding his time against either tank-like opponents like Genbu, or skilled opponents like Team Masho’s Touya and Gama. However, it also means that he is one of the most ruthless members, as once he identifies a weakness, he will not hesitate to exploit it. Examples of such include his battle with Gourmet and eventually the Elder Toguro, in which he used a plant called the Sinning Tree to lock the Elder Toguro into an eternal illusion of suffering as his energy was drained away. His skills are not infallible though. For example, in his fight against Karasu in the final rounds of the Dark Tournament, although he secured the kill, he lost by technicality; he had been deemed the loser by a ten count.
His specific skills are only more prevalent when Kurama regresses into his former self, the demon fox Youko Kurama. (Mind, the English dub uses Youko as a name, while it actually just translates to/describes a demon fox. I will probably use it interchangeably, because it is easier to do it in English.) In addition to being extremely intelligent, he is prone to the cruel and sadistic nature of a true demon, though he exhibits more elegance in the way he carries himself. Just because he wants to spill your blood doesn’t mean he won’t make light of it, and remain the more dignified creature.
Tying in with his strategic mind, Kurama is excellent at puzzles, and is not afraid to take initiative where he excels. Within the Game Master Amanuma’s territory in the Chapter Black Saga, he uses his knowledge of the game they are forced to play to decide how to proceed. He also makes the decision to kill Amanuma in order to proceed, although it causes him much internal strife, as he was forced to ignore the ethics of the situation and intimidate Amanuma with the prospect of what his loss as the master of the game meant: certain death by the rules of the game he’d chosen.
Though Kurama’s time in the human plane has given him compassion he did not initially have before his rebirth, he knows when a death cannot be avoided. No matter if he feels guilty later, he will always do what’s best for the team, tactically.
